Following the release of Mother’s Day on Netflix, here’s everything you need to know about the new film.

What is Mother’s Day about?

Mother’s Day is billed as a “dark, suspenseful and exciting” thriller about a mother trying to save her son after he’s kidnapped – but he has no idea who she is. The original title is Dzień Matki.

The official synopsis reads, “When the son she never knew is kidnapped, former special agent Nina uses her deadly skills to bring him home – no matter who gets in her way.”

First, this film is not to be confused with 2016’s Mother’s Day, an ensemble romantic comedy from the director of Valentine’s Day and New Year’s that stars Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts and Jason Sudeikis.

Here’s something else weird, though: the plot is very similar (at least from the start) to that of Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother, in which a former assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she left behind earlier in life .

Grochowska is best known for her roles in Obce niebo, Child 44 and Upperdog. Mateusz Rakowicz, who has also worked on Romantik, The Getaway King and Dzien Matki, is directing.

Is it worth watching Mother’s Day?

It’s too early to rate Mother’s Day on Rotten Tomatoes, but reviews so far have been generally positive.

sky of horror wrote: “Mother’s Day is a new Netflix action thriller with a plot that will seem quite familiar to you if you’ve seen The Mother. In fact, however, the two differ significantly. Mainly because this new Polish film is a lot darker and grittier.”

Also digital mafia talkies wrote: “Mother’s Day is a great action film. It knows what it is and doesn’t want to be taken too seriously. Agnieszka Grochowska is amazing and as I look forward to the sequel I want to see her in at least five more movies set in this universe.”
