The Diplomat Season 2: Netflix renews the hit Keri Russell series

Between The night agent And The diplomatit’s been a good year for breezy, action-packed Netflix political thriller series. The former was a huge hit for the streaming service and was quickly renewed, and the latter has now also received a second season, Netflix announced on Monday.

In the diplomat, Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler, a career diplomat preparing for a tough but exciting mission in Afghanistan. She is informed at the last moment that she will be appointed the new US Ambassador to the UK instead – partly due to a terrorist attack that blew up a British ship, but also due to the plans of her wily husband Hal (Rufus). Sewell), another career diplomat.

Created by The west wing And HomelandDeborah Cahn, The diplomat is twisted and full of fast-paced political intrigue, ending with an absolutely shocking revelation that will no doubt take a long time to unwrap in season two. But the show really works because of the performances of its two leads.

Russell, who also serves as a co-producer, has previously hosted political thriller shows including FX’s Fantastic Series The American, and infuses the extremely competent and occasionally overzealous Kate with effervescent energy. She is in a hostile (but often supportive) relationship with her husband and is very opposed to her new job, which is usually reserved for American businessmen, who are given the post in exchange for financial support from politicians. It’s a change for everyone involved: she’s not used to the ceremony of the role, and the people who support her aren’t used to an ambassador who actually takes the job seriously.

Sewell is also great as her troubled husband, who is alternately supportive and devious, and their complicated relationship occasionally brings a sense of playfulness to the action-packed series.

“I’m super excited to be back for another round of this smart screwball show. May I say it’s fun?” Russell said in a statement. “Thank you Netflix for giving us another chance.”

Netflix says The diplomat was watched for 57.48 million hours and was in the top 10 in 86 different countries in its first weekend on the platform. There’s no word yet on when Season 2 will premiere.
