The era of password sharing at Netflix is over. But that doesn’t mean you can’t circumvent the new rules.
The popular streamer announced Earlier this month, it announced that strict action against account sharing would come sooner rather than later in the US. Netflix has added the ability to pay for additional account users in countries like Canada, and while it’s safe to assume that the States will eventually do the same, things are a bit grimmer at the moment.
From today’s perspective, however, there seems to be an easy way to circumvent the new rules. That’s how it works.
How to bypass Netflix account sharing restrictions
Netflix’s new official policy(opens in a new tab) is as vague as it gets: “A Netflix account is meant to be shared within a household (people living in the same place as the account owner). People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own accounts to watch Netflix.”
In practice, this is how Netflix uses, for example, the IP address of your home internet to determine whether you are really at home or whether the account is being used elsewhere. While Netflix may introduce stricter measures in the future, life hacker(opens in a new tab) found an easy way to circumvent these new rules.
If you attempt to access Netflix in the US outside of your home location, you’ll be prompted to enter a verification code, which will be sent to the primary account holder. If that person is you and you’re just trying to watch Netflix in a hotel room or something, you shouldn’t have a problem sticking with it. However, if you are not As an account holder, you may need to get a little creative.
