Netflix has started sending out emails to let US users know about it The happy days of password sharing are over. While you’re still technically able to share your account with people outside of your household, it’s no longer free to do so now.
According to a sample email shared in Blog post from Netflix(opens in a new tab)you now have to pay an additional $7.99 per month for one additional member place(opens in a new tab) if you want to share a Netflix account outside of your household.
Unfortunately, additional member seats are only available on Netflix’s Standard or Premium plans, which cost $15.49 and $19.99 per month, respectively. Standard plans allow for one additional member to be added, while premium subscriptions allow for two.
Alternatively, you can save a profile from a previously shared account by transferring it to a new paid membership, ensuring its watchlist and recommendations remain intact.
However, unless the owner of this profile is willing to watch commercials on Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan, it’s cheaper to pay the $7.99 per month for an additional member seat, as long as your subscription plan supports it. Netflix’s cheapest plan is the Standard plan with ads at $6.99 per month, while the next tier up is the Basic plan at $9.99 per month.
Some additional restrictions apply to additional member accounts. Additional members can only watch Netflix or download titles on one device at a time and can only have one profile. Nor can it be a child profile. So you’re out of luck if you want to share Netflix with your child but not your ex. The account must also be created and activated in the same country as the main account holder.
However, additional members also have their own passwords, which is especially useful if you’re a nightmarish security gremlin who uses the same password for everything.
Netflix has emphasized that Users can continue to use the service while travelingso you can still fall asleep love is blind in your hotel room. However, if you are away from home for a “long period of time” you may need to request a temporary access code to continue using your account.
Suddenly paying a fee for a feature they were using for free will no doubt leave many users in bad taste. Netflix seems to be aware of this, as well as the fact that “members have a lot of entertainment options” – such as hulu, Prime video, AppleTV+, Paramount+, Disney+And the reissued Max.
As a result, Netflix said it “continues to invest heavily in a variety of new movies and TV shows” to keep customers coming back, such as the recent series $2.5 billion investment in South Korean entertainment(opens in a new tab).
