Netflix’s May December premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and at the time of writing has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 89% based on 35 reviews. The Independent wrote: “May December is a no frills, no special effects film. It’s a tightly focused character study, driven by the great performances of Portman and Moore, and explores areas that more conventional drama can’t quite reach.”

Just also praised the film: “A most compelling film about Hollywood vanity, interpersonal sadism and the human capacity for self-deception.”

Filming for the film took place in Savannah, Georgia between October and November 2022 and the film’s running time was 113 minutes.

What is the plot? May December?

Here is the synopsis for Netflix May December:

“May December refers to the nature of a scandalous romance between a married woman and a 13-year-old that was a tabloid staple 20 years ago. As in the May-December romance between teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, Moore’s character served time for seducing an underage teenager, but eventually married the teenager and they moved away to start a family and to live a quiet life. The film is triggered by the interaction between the couple and an actress (Portman) who travels to Maine to study the life of the woman she will play in a film. Sparks fly between the three as unresolved issues resurface in a romantic drama.

Twenty years after their infamous tabloid love story swept across the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband Joe (twenty-three years her junior) are preparing for their twins to graduate from high school. When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry spends time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will play in a film, family dynamics are thrown off balance under pressure from outsiders. Joe, who never came to terms with what happened when he was young, begins to confront the reality of life as an empty nester at thirty-six. And as Elizabeth and Gracie gaze at each other, the similarities and differences between the two women begin to fade. Set in quaint and cozy Camden, Maine, “May December” is an exploration of truth, storytelling, and the difficulty (or impossibility) of fully understanding another person.”

in a (n Interview with Haynessaid the prolific director, the film “explores one of the great abilities of the human species: our categorical refusal to look ourselves in the face.”

No trailer for the film has been released yet, although a short clip was released to the public during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival:
